Rochester Castle stands proud on the east bank of the River Medway. It is believed to have been built around 1127 by William of Corbeil, the Archbishop of Canterbury alongside Henry I. Protecting the south-east coast from invasion during the late medieval period. In 1215 the part of the castle was destroyed by King John, who used pig fat to fire a mine under the keep. Henry III and Edward I rebuilt the castle and it was used as a fortress until the sixteenth century. It’s Norman tower-keep is 113 foot high with it’s own set of boundary defense’s protecting it’s grounds and the main castle.

It’s grounds are today open to the public who can enjoy this picturesque landscape and explore the history. Events are also held here such as an outdoor cinema and castle concerts. The castle itself is now a quality assured visitor attraction under the English Heritage and it’s tours and events are enjoyed by locals and attract many visitors to Rochester and Medway.
